Reading all the 5/5 star reviews, makes this feel redundant, so instead take this as your sign to call now.

This husband and wife duo expertly and professionally handled my appointment from the first phone call to the parting handshake.

Sarah was the lead as she was the first person I made contact with. I had a situation that was not an emergency, but still urgent, that would require them to come after hours. Even knowing that it wasn’t an emergency, Sarah still did everything in her power to get a technician out to me as soon as possible. She was extremely communicative, and her lines were open past business hours in order to accommodate me and my needs. Not only was she welcoming, but she was patient, understanding of my situation, and eager to help. So I want to give her a special thank you for facilitating the appointment during her personal time.

Then the closer came in the form of Justin, who picked up right where his wife left off with professionalism and experience, but also the patience to explain everything that he was going do to tackle my situation. He is a wealth of both experience and knowledge, and genuinely just a good person - type that you feel comfortable with being in your home and respecting your space, while treating your house better than he would treat his own.

I had an unusual toilet installation that required the existing water shut off valve to be moved to a different location. I had a tight timeframe due to scheduling conflicts that had him come out on a Saturday to complete the job. The initial plan would’ve had me also do drywall repair, painting, and then have the toilet installed after that had all been completed. Justin, masterfully, found a way to move my waterline and have it installed without the need for any of that extra work to be done. I didn’t call him for the toilet installation, but he did his job so efficiently that he had the time to install my toilet afterwards, which saved me a good four days worth of other plumbers and handyman coming out. And to top it all off, he waived the toilet installation fee!!! Which would have been very expensive because this was all overtime work!

Justin is an amazing plumber and an even more amazing human being. His passion for his career shines through in his work, and is only overshadowed by his love for his family. He’s driven by doing the job the right way and giving the customer what they need while also doing right by them. To find a tradesmen this dedicated to his craft after everything he’s been through in his journey, is a rarity I don’t think you should take lightly. Therefore I wholeheartedly recommend Sarah and Justin for all of your plumbing needs. Thank you both so much.

I just had a great experience working with The Plumbing Doctor. Justin came in to fix an issue we were having with an old urinal in the bathroom at my church. He gave me all the details I needed about our pipes and the valve we needed, etc., enabling me to make what I feel was the right choice - to remove it! He got it out of there and capped everything off nicely and cleaned up. He didn't recommend the most expensive solution. He gave me the facts and I was able to decide for myself. Also, Sarah in the office is a perfect communicator and worked with me before and after the weekend to get the timing perfect. Over all the experience was top notch. Thank you!

Warning Signs

Signs Your Portland Sewer Line May Need Repair

Sewer problems often begin with symptoms that look like ordinary drain issues. When those symptoms affect several fixtures or keep returning after cleaning, the problem is usually farther inside the sewer line.

  • Multiple drains backing up at the same time
  • Toilets bubbling or gurgling when another fixture drains
  • Recurring clogs that return after being cleared
  • Sewage odors inside or outside the property
  • Wastewater backing up into a shower, tub, or floor drain
  • Wet, sunken, or unusually green areas in the yard
  • Slow drainage throughout the building
  • Tree-root intrusion, cracks, offsets, or collapsed sections

A single slow sink is usually a localized clog. Problems affecting several fixtures point to the building drain or sewer lateral.

Common Sewer Problems

Sewer Line Problems We Address

We identify the reason the problem keeps returning, then recommend the most practical solution for the affected section of pipe.

Broken or Cracked Pipes

Ground movement, age, installation problems, and soil pressure can crack underground pipe and allow wastewater to escape while soil and roots enter.

Tree-Root Intrusion

Portland’s mature trees can send roots through loose joints and cracks. Root removal may restore flow temporarily, but the opening still needs attention.

Collapsed or Separated Lines

Collapsed, misaligned, or separated pipe sections restrict wastewater flow, collect debris, and often require structural repair or replacement.

Corroded or Deteriorated Pipe

Older sewer materials can weaken across one section or the full lateral. Inspection helps determine whether repair remains practical.

Recurring Main Drain Backups

Repeated backups may point to roots, structural damage, improper slope, a sagging section, or another recurring obstruction.

Leaking Sewer Laterals

Private sewer-line responsibility depends on location and configuration. Applicable repairs must follow Portland permit and inspection requirements.

Minimize Disruption

Trenchless Sewer Repair in Portland

Many homeowners ask whether their yard, driveway, patio, or concrete must be dug up. Where the pipe condition and project location allow, trenchless methods can reduce excavation.

Pipe Lining

A resin-coated liner is inserted into the existing pipe and cured in place, creating a new pipe inside the old one. This can suit cracked or root-damaged pipes that remain structurally continuous.

Pipe Bursting

A new pipe is pulled through the old pipe’s path as the existing line is broken outward. This can suit lines that are too deteriorated for lining.

Trenchless work is not right for every sewer line. Severe collapse, major misalignment, access limitations, or right-of-way conditions may still require excavation.

Trenchless Method Traditional Excavation
Less surface disruption Direct access to exposed pipe
May preserve landscaping Useful for severe collapse
Depends on pipe continuity Can correct major alignment issues
Not suitable in every location May require restoration afterward

Repair or Replace?

Which Sewer Line Solution Do You Need?

Not every sewer problem requires replacing the entire line. The decision should be based on the pipe’s condition, location, and ability to provide a reliable repair.

Sewer Line Repair May Fit When

  • Damage is limited to a short section
  • Most of the pipe remains sound
  • One joint or connection has failed
  • The problem is locally accessible
  • Widespread deterioration is not present

Replacement May Fit When

  • Several sections are cracked or deteriorated
  • The pipe is partially or fully collapsed
  • Roots repeatedly enter multiple sections
  • Previous repairs have not solved the problem
  • Slope or alignment is seriously defective

What to Expect

Our Sewer Line Repair Process

We move from symptoms to diagnosis, options, scope, and testing so you understand what is happening and why the recommended work is appropriate.

1

Review the Symptoms

We discuss affected fixtures, recurring backups, odors, wet areas, past repairs, inspection findings, and any City notice.

2

Identify the Location

We determine whether the issue involves a fixture, interior drain, building drain, or underground sewer lateral.

3

Evaluate the Options

We explain the cause, affected section, access needs, repair or replacement options, and applicable permits.

4

Provide Upfront Pricing

You receive the proposed scope and price before approved work begins.

5

Complete the Work

The affected sewer section is accessed, repaired, or replaced according to the agreed plan.

6

Test the Completed Line

We confirm wastewater flows correctly and repaired connections function as intended.

Local Requirements

Portland Sewer Laterals, Permits, and Inspections

Responsibility and permit requirements depend on where the damaged section is located and how the private line connects to the public sewer system.

Sewer Lateral Location

Responsibility may differ for pipe on private property, between the property line and curb, inside the right-of-way, within an easement, or in a shared system.

Permits and Inspections

Work between the building and property line generally requires a plumbing permit. Applicable right-of-way work may require a separate lateral repair permit and inspection.

Shared or Nonconforming Lines

Some properties use party sewers, cross another property, or connect through an easement. The existing configuration should be clarified before work begins.

Project Pricing

Sewer Line Repair Cost in Portland

Sewer line repair and replacement cost varies because underground conditions differ from one property to another. A short, accessible repair is normally less involved than replacing a deep lateral beneath concrete, landscaping, or the public right-of-way.

An on-site evaluation is the most reliable way to determine the correct scope and price.

Cost factors can include:

  • Location of the damaged pipe
  • Length of the affected section
  • Pipe depth and material
  • Accessibility
  • Extent of structural damage
  • Trenchless method or excavation
  • Landscaping, concrete, or pavement
  • Right-of-way involvement
  • Permit and inspection requirements
  • Nearby underground utilities
  • Partial repair or full replacement
  • Surface restoration

Answers to Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common signs of a broken sewer line?

Common signs include multiple slow drains, repeated backups, gurgling toilets, sewage odors, wastewater entering tubs or showers, and unusually wet or green areas in the yard.

Can a sewer line be repaired without digging up my yard?

Sometimes. Trenchless methods may reduce excavation when the pipe’s condition, alignment, and location allow. Severe collapse or major misalignment may still require excavation.

Who is responsible for the sewer line in Portland?

Responsibility depends on the location and ownership of the pipe. Portland property owners are generally responsible for the private sewer line from the building toward the curb, while the City maintains specified portions of the public system. Shared lines, easements, and nonconforming sewers can differ. (Portland.gov)

Do I need a permit to repair a sewer line in Portland?

Yes. Sewer line repair generally requires a permit and inspection. Work on private property typically requires a plumbing permit, while applicable work in the public right-of-way requires an additional lateral repair permit. (Portland.gov)

Can a sewer line be repaired without replacing the entire pipe?

Yes. A localized repair may be possible when the damage affects one limited section and the remaining pipe is in acceptable condition.

When does a sewer line need complete replacement?

Replacement may be appropriate when the pipe is extensively cracked, collapsed, badly corroded, repeatedly invaded by roots, improperly aligned, or failing in several locations.

Does drain cleaning repair a damaged sewer pipe?

No. Drain cleaning removes an obstruction and restores flow, but it does not repair cracks, collapsed sections, separated joints, or structural defects. For ordinary blockages, visit our Portland drain cleaning page.

Can tree roots damage a Portland sewer line?

Yes. Roots can enter through cracks and loose joints, expand inside the pipe, and cause recurring blockages. Root removal alone may not correct the opening that allowed them to enter.

How much does sewer line replacement cost in Portland?

Cost depends on pipe depth, length, condition, accessibility, permits, method, surrounding surfaces, and whether the work extends into the right-of-way.

What should I do if sewage is backing up into my home?

Stop using water and plumbing fixtures, keep people and pets away from contaminated areas, and contact a plumber promptly.
